Backup or DRaaS: how many hours of downtime can you afford?

Business tips Published: · 5 min read

After a fire in the server room, you have backups. Great. Now the question: how many hours until accounting is back at work? The answer is what separates backup from DRaaS.

Two numbers that decide everything

RPO is how much data you’re prepared to lose: a daily backup means losing up to 24 hours of work. RTO is how quickly you’re prepared to recover: finding hardware, installing the system, restoring the backup, checking it — that’s hours or days.

What backup gives you

Copies in a data center with version history: your data survives both a fire and ransomware. RPO is 6 to 24 hours, RTO ranges from a few hours (if you have somewhere to restore to) to several days (if you need to buy a server). Cost: 300 UZS per GB of stored copies per day, with no separate fee per server or machine.

What DRaaS gives you

A server replica ready to start in the data center: changes are transferred every 15–60 minutes, in an emergency the replica is switched on within minutes, and staff connect to it. RPO is 15–60 minutes, RTO is 15–30 minutes. Cost: 5 000–12 000 UZS per server per day plus storage; the resources of a running replica are billed only while it’s running.

A side-by-side example

Scenario: the 1C server in the office burned downBackup onlyDRaaS “Standard”
Data lossup to 6–24 hoursup to 1 hour
Back to work1–3 days (purchase, installation, restore)15–30 minutes
Protection cost per month (150 GB server)from ≈ 1 350 000 UZS (150 GB of copies × 300 UZS; with version history, copies take up more)≈ 240 000 UZS (5 000 + 150 × 20 UZS per day)
Cost of downtime (accounting and warehouse, 10 people)2–3 days of salaries + missed shipmentspractically zero

What to choose

  • One server, a day of downtime is tolerable — backup with a copy in the data center. A must.
  • 1C, a database, POS, customer-facing services — DRaaS for that server plus backup for everything else.
  • Several interdependent servers — DRaaS “entire site” with a failover plan in the right order.

Backup and DRaaS don’t replace each other: a replica protects your time, while versioned backups protect against mistakes and ransomware discovered a week later. Critical systems need both.
