Checklist: Moving Your Company’s IT Infrastructure to the Cloud
Business tips Published: 23.06.2026 · 6 min read
Cloud migrations rarely fail for technical reasons. What usually derails them is the lack of a plan: no clarity on what moves first or how to roll back if something goes wrong.
Step 1. Take inventory
List everything that runs today: servers, services, databases, file shares, who uses them and how critical downtime is for each. Without this table there’s no point moving forward.
Step 2. Set the order
Start with the least critical: a test environment, an internal service, a file archive. They let you rehearse the process and see realistic timelines. Accounting systems and anything tied to money go last.
Step 3. Ask the provider the right questions
- What availability level is written into the contract?
- Where is the data physically located?
- How are backups organized, and can you restore to a specific date?
- Can you take your virtual machine with you in full if you decide to leave?
- How does support work at night and on weekends?
- How is billing calculated, and what happens when the balance hits zero?
Step 4. Prepare a rollback plan
Before migrating each service, answer this: how do you go back if, an hour later, it turns out something doesn’t work? The old system should stay available until the new one has run for at least a week.
Step 5. Migrate and verify
After the move, check more than just “the website loads” — check what people usually forget: outgoing email, scheduled jobs, integrations with banks and payment systems, document printing, and access for every group of employees.
Step 6. Set up what will protect you later
Backups, availability monitoring, access control. You do this once, and it pays for itself at the very first incident.
Step 7. Re-check resources after a month
Look at the actual load and right-size the configuration. With daily billing, unused resources are wasted money every single day.
