Snapshot, Veeam Backup and OVA Export: What’s the Difference

VPS and servers Published: 24.03.2026 · 5 min read

A snapshot is not a backup. Understanding the difference between these three mechanisms saves you from a very unpleasant discovery on the day you actually need your data.

Snapshot: a quick rollback

A capture of a virtual machine’s state at a specific moment. It takes seconds to create and minutes to roll back. Ideal before a system update, a 1C configuration change or a risky tweak.

An important limitation: a snapshot is stored alongside the machine itself. If a problem affects the storage, the snapshot is lost along with the data. It’s a rollback tool, not a protection tool.

Veeam backup: real protection

The backup is stored separately from the machine. You can restore either the entire virtual machine or its state at a chosen point in time. This is what saves you in case of hardware failure, ransomware or accidental data deletion.

Backups run on a schedule without any involvement on your part — this is what you should enable for everything business-critical.

OVA export: a copy in your hands

OVA is a standard virtual machine image format. Once exported, you have a complete instance of the server that you can deploy on another platform or keep on your own premises. It’s insurance against vendor lock-in and a convenient way to hand a ready-made environment over to a contractor.

Using them together

  • Before an update: a snapshot. If something goes wrong, roll back in minutes.
  • Continuously: scheduled Veeam backups.
  • Periodically or before major changes: an OVA export as an independent copy.

The three-copy rule

The classic backup rule: three copies of your data, on two different media, one of them off-site. Copies in cloud storage cover the last point: they’ll survive both an office fire and equipment theft.
