Renting a rack in a data center: what’s included and how to calculate power

Colocation Published: · 5 min read

With three servers, counting units is simpler. With ten, your own switches, a UPS and a request to “install our storage system”, you need a rack. Here’s what comes with it.

When a rack beats individual units

A section or rack beats individual units from as few as 9–10 servers: a quarter rack (10U) costs 120 000 UZS per day versus 150 000 for 10 × 1U, a half rack (21U) pays off from 15 units, and a full rack from 27. Plus you get things units don’t offer: your own switches and patch panels, your own cable management, a locked door, and the ability to install non-standard equipment — storage systems, tape libraries, chassis.

What’s included in the rack price

  • A 42U cabinet in the server hall with access control and video surveillance.
  • Two independent power feeds (A+B) via UPS and diesel generator — with a power limit you choose when ordering (for example, 6 or 10 kW); power is billed separately.
  • Cooling and humidity control.
  • A port into the data center network and an internet uplink; cross-connects to carriers are a separate service.
  • Access for the client’s engineers from an approved list — by arrangement, with a visitor log.
  • Basic Remote Hands operations: reboot, indicator check, cable reconnection.

How to calculate power

Power isn’t included in the rack price and is billed for the total allocated load (power limit) the client chooses when ordering — for example 6 kW or 10 kW: 50 UZS per 1 W per day. 6 kW = 300 000 UZS per day, 10 kW = 500 000. To choose the limit, add up your equipment’s consumption and leave headroom: a typical 1U server draws 150–300 W, a 2U server with disks 300–500 W, a storage system 500–800 W, plus switches. Quarter and half racks work the same way — you choose the limit, and it can be raised on request.

What to ask a data center before signing

  1. How many power feeds are there, and do they come from different UPS units?
  2. How often is the generator tested under load?
  3. Is cooling N+1, and what happened during the last failure?
  4. Which carriers are present in the building, and how much does a cross-connect cost?
  5. Who responds to a request at night, and how quickly?
  6. Can you bring your own storage system or non-standard-depth chassis?

How much it costs

A 42U rack in the MyCloud data center costs 400 000 UZS per day, a half rack (21U) 220 000 UZS and a quarter rack (10U) 120 000 UZS per day. Power is billed separately for the chosen power limit: for example, 42U + 6 kW = 400 000 + 300 000 = 700 000 UZS per day ≈ 21 000 000 UZS per month; 42U + 10 kW = 400 000 + 500 000 = 900 000 UZS per day ≈ 27 000 000 UZS per month. When moving from another data center, we help arrange transport and installation.
